Strategy games

Strategy games are a genre that focuses on planning and thinking ahead to achieve a goal, with chance taking a more minor role. In most strategy-based games, the player gets an omnipotent view of the game's environment, and controls the game's characters indirectly. Many strategy games involve warfare of some form, with the economy of the game's world being important as well.

There are some action games that involve some element of strategy, but not enough to classify them as true strategy games. These games are usually much larger in focus, and the main idea is for one player to outthink others. Strategy games almost never involve a physical component, and compared to other genres such as adventure or action, the playing field is relatively level.

The games of this genre involve tactical, strategic and logistical issues, making them different from puzzle games. Strategy games encourage the player to plan around the conflicts they face with other players, and they are different from simulation games in that they aren't primarily focused on economic challenges. While some simulation games contain an element of conflict, they aren't considered to be strategic in nature because the conflict within doesn't require direct action upon one's opponent.

Strategy games are similar to RPGs in some ways- players have to manage characters with numeric attributes. However, RPGs tend to concentrate on a smaller group of characters, while strategy games focus on larger numbers of similar characters.
